CorkScrew
Neds

The first ride of the new year. We shuttled to the top and did CorkScrew for the first time, followed by an old favorite Neds. This was the first time Steve has had armour and it showed because his confidence was much higher than in previous rides.

On this ride I had went over my bars twice. Once on CorkScrew since I did a log ride that the guys before us said you could ride out of... maybe but my wheel got caught in the mud at the end. It would have been easier to just drop off the end. I'll know for next time. The other time over the bars was because I was just too far forward. It was a section of the trail that I had done many times before. Either way, there were no injuries. :)

This was one of the regular thursday rides, however Ben had a broken thumb and John had Birthday celebrations. It was also the first time that I was able to use the new lights from Sharlyane and Steve. What a difference they made. I had a 5 watt for climbing, and then on the decent I used 15w on my helmet, 15w and 5w on my bars. It was much easier to ride since I could see what was coming and the depth perception was much higher too. Only two wipe outs. :)

We shuttled this one since we did not have a lot of time. Overall it was a really good ride. We were all fairly confident. About half way down I cracked my rim and got a flat. We quicly changed the tire and bent the rim back into shape... but about 2 minues later, Steve got a flat so we had to stop and change that tire too. The rest of the ride was pretty un-eventful. I did have one fall during the ride in which I lost my balance riding down a ramp. As I approached the edge of the ramp I decided to bail by grabbing a near by tree. Well, that was a mistake since the bike shot out from under me and I landed on the edge of the ramp. The resulting bruise on my leg was HUGE. About 4 inches long and 2 inches wide with beautiful colors to boot. As I am writing this description (3 weeks later) it is still a wonderful set of colors... but at least it is no longer painful.

A few local trails
This Thursday night ride began with a little catch. On my way to John's house, I noticed that my rim was rubbing my brakes. So as soon as I got there I asked if we could bend the rim a bit. Once the wheel was off we noticed that the side walls of the rim were seperating from the wheel in about three spots. It was also cracked and really bent! I guess the last ride was harder on the wheel than I thought. I ended up using Maria's rear wheel for the ride. The ride itself was not my best. There were a lot of places that I should have done the stunt cleanly but just gave up too easily or lost traction. I could blame the narrower tire, but a lot of it was me. I have a new rim now so the next ride should be pretty good!
2002-03-21 Kevin Local trails Another Thursday night ride, however nobody was around this week. Since I was all geared up to go, I decided to do two quick loops of a local trail. It took around half an hour. The climbs really worked my cardio since the trails were covered with snow and I was losing a lot of traction... however I still managed to make it up. The downhill was pretty fun. The first lap I did a trail that has a teeter totter... the second lap I did a trail with a log ride. Don't worry, I had a cell phone and was close enough to home that I could crawl home if I needed to. The beauty of living on the north shore!

Burnaby Mountain This was a great saturday morning. I met Ben and Chris around 9 in the morning and then we drove to Burnaby Mountain. The trail was varied. There were a few technical sections and a few scattered stunts. The climb was intermixed with some downhill, but overall I would say it was an intermiate ride. Most of the people had full suspension bikes, but I managed to do everything the FSers did on my hard tail. (It was just a bit harder on my body) This was a great group of riders with a wide variety of skills. I hope to get out with them again some day.

Severed A night ride up to, and then down severed. It was the first night ride in awhile and the fog was out so it made visibility low.

Local trails Steve and I just went for a little cardio. The plan was to do two or three laps of the local loop. (It takes about 10 minutes per loop) However, the first loop we did had a teeter totter that we played on a bit... until Steve went off the edge and landed on his head. That gave him a headache so we decided to head back. As I was hopping my bike to turn around, I managed to pull the cleat right off my shoe! So the ride was definately over for the afternoon.

A double shuttle! Quite a full evening. The first run was pretty fun. Especially for Ben with his new Kona Stinky Deluxe bike! He was pretty impressed with its handling. My night, on the other hand was not as good. Three flats, one dead battery and a clip that was not behaving. I am going to need to do an overhaul on my bike to get it ready for the next ride. Overall, it was still a fun night! I did a few log rides and one awsome dismount. (Side bunny hop from about 3.5 feet in the air... it was that or else bail)

Nothing much I had another breakdown. A flat again so I just hiked out. I did not want a repeat of last week. This was mountain biking at its worst...

Local trails Daryl and I did three local loops and then practiced some technical riding beside our house. Drops, narrow log rides, hopping, balance, etc. We even video taped some of it so that we could critique our ride.

Neds The technical training paid off. Today was the best ride I have had in a long time!!! I hit all the stunts, did a 2.5' and a 3' drop perfectly! It was a fast ride with no breakdowns. This is the way it should always be!
Many thursday rides have passed...

Whistler

An awesome time riding downhill at whistler and taking the chair lift up. We rented Norco VPS Team DH bikes. (8" of suspension front and back, a $6000 bike) and rode hard all day. By the end of the day we were getting pretty good at clearing the table top jumps! When I find my map I will write down the trails that we did.

We shuttled to the top and rode down very fast. I only had two wipe outs, one one I kinda stretched something in my ankle, the other was minor. Bad had the trophy wipeout on this run as he donated a bunch of skin to the drop in the rock quarry. My bike was definately a hard tail. (As always) but really noticeable since my previous ride was on that wonderful norco. I found that after 20 minutes my wrists were very tired and sore... whereas we rode for hours at whistler without wearing out. The bike still performed awsome for what it is...

A great ride although the exhaust from Randy's car blew his tire on the way up. We started late and ended up doing the last part of the ride in the dark without lights. Fun though.

Neds My first climb in awhile... I have been lazy and shuttled for the past few rides and it really showed. I did race up Old Buck, beating the others by about five to ten minutes... but then the rest of the climb I was pathetic... having to walk most of it. I partly blame the fact that it was my first climb on flat pedals... although I am sure a big part of it was my lack of endurance.

This was probably our worst ride of the season. Many falls and crashes... although amazingly, nobody drew blood! However in spite of the horrible performance, we still had fun.

Old Buck
Team Pangor
A better run that last time in that the falls were not too bad, however we were both suffering from not having enough energy. Probably because it has been so long since the last ride. I did take one bad fall. I was trying to hop my bike up onto a log and fell over backwards. That in itself would not have been too bad except that I landed on a rock. It still hurts to straighten up. :(

Ledgeview A great ride. Note to self... don't do the technical run in the mud. It is not that fun and not worth the climb... however the high speed downhill trail is awesome. Great banked corners, lots of jumps! Worth doing multiple times in a day. If we could only figure out how to climb from the exit rather than having to do a road ride.
2003-03-12 Kevin Upper Corkscrew, Neds

This was my first ride on my new bike. I can sum it up with the word amazing! Laura drove me to the top and then she went to drop off some recycling and went home. I beat her home. 27 minutes from the top of corkscrew to my house. In the past it has taken about that long to just get to the bottom of Neds. The difference was that I did not have to take breaks because the bike was way easier on my body. It also helped that with the ample suspension I could just jump over some of the technical sections rather than trying to negotiate my way down. There is one section in particular that always intimidated me on my old bike but with the new one I just launched over it. :) It will be a great summer of riding!!

Oh, on the first ride down I met a guy named Jamie (not my cousin) and we rode the last half together. Because the ride went so quick and I beat Laura back, she offered to shuttle me again so I actually broke in the bike by doing Corkscrew and Neds twice in a row.

I don't normally bike alone but I had my cell phone and did a trail that I have done many times so I was not to concerned.

A great ride. The first long one of the season. The top part of CBC was wet and I ended up losing the bolt that keeps my crank on. :( We taped the crank to the bike and I did the rest of the ride without being able to pedal. Still a really fun ride in spite of the breakdown. I now carry a spare bolt!

We wanted to do CBC and Boogyman, however I broke my derailer hanger and once again had to coast down the hill. (Last time it was a crank bolt) For an expensive bike, it sure breaks a lot. Both trails were dry and great fun!

Corkscrew
Boogyman
I would say that in this ride I transitioned from advanced to extreme riding. I rode almost everything on boogyman, including the rock faces at the end. I also beat my last rides' personal best by quite a bit. I did a 6' drop and is was perfectly smooth. My confidence is currently riding high and I am really starting to get the feel of this Specialized Bighit! I'm looking forward to the next ride!

Another great ride. I was looking forward to trying the 6' jump again but some vandals cut it up with a chainsaw and dug up the landing making it very unsafe to even attempt. (I am sure people will eventually attempt it but the way they left it, it was beyond my riding ability)
The ride was still fun though. I did a few of the other drops and improved my confidence. I also brought the camera on this ride so if you go to the video section of this site you will be able to see some of the jumps that we did, including some of the wipeouts. Ben had one pretty bad fall but fortunately his armour did its job and he walked away without any injuries. At the end of the ride I thought I was going to clean the rock faces, however after getting about half way down I went over the bars and slid down one of the rock faces. I ended up skinning both knees because the armour is good for impact but not so good for sliding on. :( Luckily I did not damage the camera or the bike.

Neds
My first climb on the bike and it was tough! I had to walk many sections and was completely soaked and out of breath by about half way. Coming down made it all worth it though. I rode everything on Neds. All the big drops, ramps and even the big jump off a log in the middle. (At least 6 feet depending where you land. I will measure the next time I go back. I can now say that I have done everything on Neds. :) A happy camper am I.
2003-06-28 Kevin
Chris
CBC, Corkscrew, Neds I am writing this in Mid July so I am not 100% sure those are the trails we did. This was a last minute ride since Chris called up saying he got a new bike but he had not taken it downhill yet. He got a BigHit Pro... great bike so by the end of the summer expect to see him flying off of everything!
2003-07-02 Kevin
Allan
CBC, Corkscrew, Pingu, Boogyman Allans first ride on the shore. He did not bring water thinking it would be an easy downhill. It was an awesome ride though. We did those for trails in about an hour... normally it takes an hour and a half to two hours. A great ride!

Upper Oilcan, Air Supply, Pink Starfish, and some other trail... no idea what its name was This was a great ride as well. We did the climb in about an hour and started off with Upper Oilcan. None of us tried the first ride over the stump. Next time I will... I just couldn't justify risking injury after a grueling hour ride up hill. We did try most of the other stunts on Upper Oilcan. Crystal, unfortunatly, took a dive about half way down oilcan which made the rest of the ride rather painful for her.
After that trail we did Air supply, or should I say we rode past the stunts on air supply. The gap jumps and stunts were far more technical that our ability, but it was great to see them. It is nice to know that we have a long way to grow in our ability... not just by going higher, but also on the technical side. The last part of the ride was a lot of technical ramps, drops, etc. It was a great ride except for the one injury. By the next day Crystal was feeling much better so it wasn't lasting. That is good.

Daryl
Upper Oilcan,
Ladies Only
This was Daryl's first ride on Fromme. Again it was a long ride up, but worth it cuz the ride down was great. I managed to get a lot more of the log ride park in Upper Oilcan this time. Daryl had a few confidence building stunts but his confidence was low because of poor braking power and the fact that he has not been downhill in over a month! Ladies Only was a fun ride too. Lots of little stunts built up. Before going down Ladies only we rode the top part of Air Supply just so Daryl could see those jumps. We also noticed a 15' drop that I had not seen before. You have to look WAY up in order to see the ramp. We walked it and that was quite a rush even without the bikes. The landing is well worn so obviously people are doing it.
Daryl
Kevin
Seymour Daryl has a new bike and we went out riding. Daryl did awsome in that I waited less for him. He rode faster and with more confidence than on previous rides. He also took a few more spills and unfortunately bruised his ribs so he will be out for awhile.

Marius
Marco
Fromme I took Marius and Marco out for their first downhill experience. Unfortunately the intermediate trail that we were going to do was not so intermediate so we hiked back up to try a different one. Right at the end we found one that was a good intro however by then they were both pretty tired and shaken. Hopefully they come out to try again some time!

This is going to be a long journal entry because it was an AWESOME day! By far the best ride of the season. We rode 14 runs averaging just over 2 runs an hour! Our fastest run was 6 minutes and 15 seconds from the top of the mountain to the bottom! For that timed run we did Dirt Merchant, A-Line, and the Biker Cross.

The ride started off kinda bad for me. My bike kept throwing me forward and I could not figure out why. Half way down I looked at the rear shock. BLOWN! There was oil all over the place. :( By about the third ride I was able to compensate for the lack of rebound dampening just by changing my riding style. It was an awesome day in spite of the shock.

Here are the rides we did:

A = A-Line
DM = Dirt Merchant
H = Hornet
J = Joyride
X = Biker Cross
S= Schleyer
GLC = GLC Drops
W = Whistler Downhill

I did it! I have successfully done all the drops that I had as goals for this year. The last drop that I was holding out on was the one near the power lines as you cross country from Neds to Hyannis Point. There is a big "rock quary" type drop... probably about 5' high. The catch is that the runout is steep so there is no stopping until about 20-30 feet later. As with all the big drops.. the hardest part is getting the nerve up to try them. The drops themselves are really not that hard with a full suspension bike.

Seymour Mike came out from Alberta and we rode together. It was a rough ride since both our bikes broke... mine was a simple fix. Mikes required parts which nobody carried.

Port Moody My first time on those trails and all I can say is WHAT A CLIMB!!! Very grueling which made the downhill tough because of exhaustion. I guess I need to work out more before going back. The stunts were amazing though.
